Bill Pinkney, the first Black sailor to circumnavigate the globe alone by the arduous southern route — rounding the five great capes of the earth’s southernmost points of land, most notably the fearsome Cape Horn — died on Thursday in Atlanta. His death, in a hospital on a visit to Atlanta, was announced by Ina Pinkney, his former wife, who said he sustained a head injury in a fall earlier this week. Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America, is where the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans meet in a treacherous scrum of churning waves battered by capricious winds called williwaws. It is known as the Mount Everest of sailing, “a mystical, mythical way point,” as Herb McCormick, the former editor of Cruising World magazine, put it in a phone interview. Those who round the cape become members of an elite club.

John Hume has been breeding rhinos since 1993 and owns the world's largest rhino farm in South Africa. He fought a global ban on trading rhino horn, which would allow him to sell it to pay for his farm. For a minimum of $10 million, you can buy 2,000 white rhinos in South Africa. For years, he campaigned to make it legal to sell rhino horn — a substance more valuable than elephant ivory, cocaine, or gold. Without being able to sell rhino horn, the cost of running his ranch — including his sophisticated security system consisting of radar detection, helicopter patrols, and armed guards — finally became too much.
Tesla's Model S/X owners will have the option to replace the yoke steering wheel with a round one. The move comes after Tesla car owners complained about the learning curve of the box wheel. Starting in March, Tesla owners can replace their current steering wheels for $700. Unlike a conventional wheel, the yoke wheel is rectangular with a tiny button for honking. The stalk — the part in conventional cars that controls core functions such as turn signals, headlights, and windshield wipers — was replaced with buttons on the steering yoke.
